I walk around New York City and I go through my usual general self-destructive thought process of how much I fucking hate living here. An unbelievable realization takes over these thoughts, there is enough interconnected coverage between wifi signals in New York City to never ever have to justify utilizing any cellular network. To be poignant, if everyone completely opened up their network there would be absolutely no reason to ever pay for cell service while you were in the city at all. So this begs the question, why isn’t this happening?
The first barrier to this is obviously money. If someone who owns a wifi network then had an ability to charge a very small price to let a limited number of people join their network wouldn’t that offset the cost of this implementation. I’d like to hear from anyone out there in internet land about this. If there was the possibility of getting charged $0.05 per 15 minutes so that you never had to pay for cell service ever again in New York City and got a much quicker and resilient connection through your wifi, would you do it?
